Did you at any time, have the lens of the camera on your phone aimed in a direction where it may have had a clear view of a component video device or cable? They are watching as well. :P Better get some electrical tape on that camera.

If you are using Android, there is no limit to what they can take and store from your phone. Audio, pics, emails, texts, you name it. So much malware on the Play Store, this happened to my brother and sister-in-law the other day.

Someone gave them an Amazon Echo for Christmas, and the strangeness got even worse. They only asked it a couple "Hey Alexa" questions before they got bored, but things they were saying in normal conversation during dinner were coming up as ads on their phones.

I wouldn't touch Google or Amazon products for the life of me.

I did not search the net, nor call anyone regarding this installation while I was at this appt. My phone was used for regular client phone calls.

How did you deal with the issue? Did you order parts?

Guys, I am a bit concerned. I was working yesterday on an 8 year old system. I was dealing with component video and an Apple Tv with HDMI and no audio.

Today on my Facebook feed I see an Amazon ad for a component video product. I took no pictures of this system.

Is my phone's microphone or camera being tapped for commercial advertising opportunities?

Yes. I'm dead serious about this question and it's implications on privacy.

Did they have an Amazon Echo in that house and did you say anything about wishing death upon HDMI?

Facebook scares the crap out of me. More than once, I've logged in and found friend recommendations that are one of our clients. I use an old email address that none of my clients have, I don't have any personal contact info like phone or address on my Facebook page. I have never installed the Facebook app on my phone. I can't think of any reason that they make a connection between me and any client.

It can use names, too. ANY online link between names will trigger this. I never looked for some of the people recommended on LinkedIn, but there they are- previous and current clients.

Random question... iphone or android? Do you have the google hangouts app installed on your phone?

edit...

I have ZERO doubt that my phone is actively listening for buzzwords that then heard triggers off some other event. I highly doubt they are actively recording and/or transferring the data anywhere.

I have noticed that my iPhone feels like it's vibrating, occasionally- I don't use that to tell me I have a call or any kind of message, so....

It's a brief vibration, which makes me wonder if location services is transmitting when this happens.

Mine has been doing that today as well.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Good call. I took a photo of the 10 yr old TV in the den. This gives me hope.

Yep. I wonder if you do tape the camera up, what will you get ads for? Flashlights?

I don't stress about this stuff, but noticed similar things over the last two weeks.

Visited a client that owns a Burnese Mountain dog which is a fairly obscure breed.  It's one of my favorite client dogs so I always hang out with it for a few minutes and will often talk with the owner about it.  Got home that night and had a video in my FB feed from the American Kennel Club about how great Burnese Mountains dogs are.

Yesterday I visited a client with a great car collection.  He had a new Ferrari that he showed me and we talked about it for a couple minutes.  Now my FB feed is full of adds for Ferraris sponsored by something called CarGurus.

Had my iPhone in my pocket both times, but didn't take any photos of dog or car and never did any web searches for information about either.  We do have an Echo at home and it's possible I talked about the dog and car with my wife/son that evening?

I'm not loosing sleep over it, but can't be a coincidence.

I see it like this. The only people who are really going to get uber paranoid and bent out of shape about "big brother"...etc., are those who are doing things that could potentially get them into trouble.

That's not true. Many years ago I had a discussion with some quite nice and above-board people regarding psychic ability... let's leave that where it is... and none of the group felt they would be comfortable having someone else know what they're privately thinking.

Perhaps this is an American thing. Our love of freedom has been supported by strong beliefs in personal privacy. The two things go hand in hand.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I replied to a post recently about this. I was simply looking at an image online. Person had sunglasses on and the brand name RayBan which is on the lense. Suddenly I see rayban ads all over the place.
I don't know how companies pay, but I certainly hope they pay millions with no return. I do my best to buy nothing related to ads I see online. Does it matter. Probably not. Some things I search for I will never see an ad. Might be time to start contacting these companies and let them know you are disgusted and will not support them.
