I would say that in the vast majority of the country 500k gets you a very nice home. Just not in major cities, or where the 1% want to live.
In fact where Mac is/was living in McHenry, 500K gets a very nice home as well.
I have been in Mchenry County for a while. We just bought a place in Mchenry. There are a lot of nice houses here at the $500k range but not many with lighting control or even distributed AV. That may be different with new builds & custom homes but all i haven't seen it.
