I think one key issue really has more to do with the fact that way too many people on one side believe that everything the other side says is false and everything their side says is true, and they spend money based on that. The outcome of that is absolutely inevitable in a world where money is required to actually BE a news source of any note.
Another is that the internet has made it very difficult to MAKE any money actually doing real journalism, because it's just information and it will be immediately stolen and you get little for your work and investment. The outcome of that is also inevitable in a world where you need to SPEND money to generate actual real news.
Why is it that everyone complains about the way things are, and never about why things are they way they are? Maybe it's because we are all to blame for why things are they way they are most of the time, and it's a lot more comfortable to condemn others for what we've made them than to condemn ourselves.
