Before the iPhone you bought and carried around your blackberry, your digital camera, your digital voice recorder, your GPS, your iPod and so on and so forth.
Thanks to apple (and the companies that copied them) you have 1 device to buy and carry around.

If this becomes a problem for you it might be time to buy an iPod. You really should have a dedicated device if you cant take your headphones off for two hours every day.
Nice.
Anyway, the thing I like most about the factory Apple earbuds is that I can listen to music or a podcast while working and it'll pause it when a call comes in. I don't miss calls. It's a mic/ play/pause/answer button and volume control. It's a nice level of integration, IMO, and I don't see it needing any improvement.
To be completely fair, I haven't used the new wireless units (they're not out yet, are they?), so who knows? Apple does have a way of making certain things work in a 'better than expected' sort of way.
