I'm pretty sure it was meant more as a joke than a serious comment. Although, I've always found it fascinating that people in other countries follow our politics.
Someone from the US, who now lives in Australia, was giving me a hard time about Trump and that her vote as a Bernie supporter wouldn't be wasted (she doesn't like Hillary, but wants a Woman (her use of a capital W, not mine) in the White House.
I asked if she would prefer that someone across the ocean were able to control what she can do, but she didn't respond to that.
Voting from outside of the country carries the same weight as living here- if someone chooses to leave for reasons other than a job or family situation, I'm not sure I like their vote as much as someone who stays.
