The remote is paired with box (probably so you can talk to it).
You can un-pair it by holding down the setup key for a few seconds until the light turns green I think, then press 981 and it will put it back into IR.
Learn the codes into your remote and you are good to go. I just did this last week.
The only button that was tricky to learn was the Contour button but I'm sure you can figure it out.
