We do this all the time and use a generic digital input. Go into "other devices" - right click on the room then new - Devices - Type, change to "Generic", then select "Generic Digital input" from the model.
For closet doors we never use a timer. Usually if you are in the closet the door will be open, If you aren't in the closet then the door is closed.
