I had a similar problem with a sony bluray player and onkyo avr. From what I could see it didn't over power the HDMI but was stuck in the handshake mode that is normally a brief blip of no video. My problem was resolved by turning off deep color in the avr.
One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one.
