It could be from any number of different problems. You could have a bad power supply, you could have a driver causing the lock-up, you could have a memory issue in the processor or you could have corrosion on the IR output ports causing a short. Pull out the emitters and see if the ends are crusty. Install the XP diagnostic driver and check for errors, crashes and other things.
