Here in NH I can get whatever I want. I haven't bothered to get my NFA Trust (easy to do) to get class III weapons, but we have more Fully automatic weapons per capita than any other state according to a 2013 report.
But as long as you pass a background check (30 minutes tops), you are good to go.
For what it's worth, my primary home defense weapon is a Keltec KSG, loaded with 14 rounds of 2 3/4" 00 buck, outfitted with a laser mounted fore grip.
Yeah, my KSG is great for home defense. bullpups make great CQB weapons, I love my IWI Tavor, that's my primary.
