Don't like the size because of the long cylinder. Well the tried using a shorter cylinder but the 410 shells kept sticking out the far end. < grin > The Crimson Trace unit is what makes this a good setup for lots of folks, IMO.

The Shotgun is the best suggestion here. With kids in the house and neighbors close by, you do NOT want something with penetrating power. A shotgun with buckshot will give plenty of incapacitating power, while not having to worry about ricochet and rounds traveling thru 3 walls. Plus when woken in the middle of the night groggy, you have a much better chance of hitting (or at least winging) your target.
Bean rounds are great to, if you don't want to murder someone. The homeless guy that just broke the back door to get at the fridge, will be much more grateful for the extra thought. Or the teenagers that made a really bad choice to do something stupid, they thought might be cool. Or your daughter's boyfriend you didn't know about, that was sneaking in to see her (another stupid bad choice). Or.... plenty of reasons where lethal force might not be the best "1st" choice.

I'm pretty sure with 9 hits in one area - they wont be back for a while.....but then again criminals are stupid.

A .410 birdshot shell will penetrate 3 pieces of 5/8" drywall with 3" space between the boards. That a wall and a half. A shotgun is still going through walls

I hate the judge. Don't like the size because of the long cylinder. But it is a good choice for defense. I would like to set up some drywall and try different .410 rounds to see how they perform Why bother? YouTube has plenty of videos and Kikock45 has tested it, too. OTOH, it's a good reason to blast things, so.....

If you want a gun immediately, rifle or shotgun is what is available. Handgun has a waiting period.
As stated previously, train with it. I'm a pretty decent shot, I really have no idea how I'd do under severe stress.
Please remember that when you get the gun out you need to be ready to make a permanent decision.
For what it's worth, my primary home defense weapon is a Keltec KSG, loaded with 14 rounds of 2 3/4" 00 buck, outfitted with a laser mounted fore grip.
Second defense is a Sig 226 with a Veridian laser.
Just in case

Just looked, never tried to buy a gun in any other state. Looks like 3 pedal and I live in the worst two states in the country.

Really? Cash and carry for a handgun? If I have a CCW permit already, yes. If not, I need a purchase permit signed by the local sheriff. I can get that purchase permit ahead of time and carry it for up to 5 years in case I find something I want to buy. Our county put purchase permit applications online and I can usually have one in under 4 hours, so can still make a same day purchase.

You can buy long guns outside your state of residence. However, from what I have been told (I haven't bothered to look it up yet) a recent court case found this federal law to be unconstitutional, and could change the rules on out of state purchases. But this could get very confusing on transporting a purchase back into a state with stricter laws. And yes, you are in one of the worst states. If memory serves correctly, MD is responsible for manufacturers shipping new firearms with test fired cartridges to try to create a database like something seen on TV. Unfortunately, the science isn't as good as on CSI

Really? Cash and carry for a handgun? Here in NH I can get whatever I want. I haven't bothered to get my NFA Trust (easy to do) to get class III weapons, but we have more Fully automatic weapons per capita than any other state according to a 2013 report. But as long as you pass a background check (30 minutes tops), you are good to go. For what it's worth, my primary home defense weapon is a Keltec KSG, loaded with 14 rounds of 2 3/4" 00 buck, outfitted with a laser mounted fore grip. Yeah, my KSG is great for home defense. bullpups make great CQB weapons, I love my IWI Tavor, that's my primary.

You guys need to move to NM -- a firearm friendly state. Just don't get on the wrong side of cops -- plenty of bullets, little restraint.
