It does sound like a cold solder joint on the board. But before I declare that to be the issue, I would try this. Not sure if you have done it so I will ask.

Open the unit, disconnect and reseat the ribbon cable for the screen. Note that the screen cable and the touchscreen cable are 2 separate entities and that would explain why touchscreen always works.
