Good morning.
I've got a problem with my Pronto 9400 (4 years old). After switching on the rc the screen stays white however it reacts to touches. I telephoned with philips customer service. They gave me a number of the repairshop who told me that repairing of rc is not possible. Can anybody help me in this case? Could it be a battery problem (to old)? Is this defect known by other users? Does anybody know a possibility of repair, perhaps in the USA. Finally this was a product of 600 Euros. To expensive to throw it away.

hi Jauno

you might be ok, if its a white screen.. look on this site on how to perform a factory reset.. this should get you back to factory default , then reload the firmware and then your project file...

Hello GoPronto.
I've tried it as described. I installed the newest firmware. While installing I saw the messages on my display - so my display works as I conclude. After the installing of the firmware I landed in my project which was still stored and which worked without problems. Until autodimming of the display.
After wake up, I had the white screen as before. I switched of the RC and made a restart - white screen again.
I reproduced the procedures - same result.
Do you have any idea what causes this problem?
Thanks
Norbert (jauno)

Are you using PEP 3 beta ? if so go back to PEP2

I used PEP3. Tried it also with PEP2. No success.
What the hell could this be? Perhaps a weak battery? My only explanation for this phenomenon cause the error appeared after beeing returned from holiday whereas the RC was not touched and has stayed in the cradle.

jauno,

I've always thought that the Prontos were too sensitive to the battery impedance. As the battery ages, its impedance rises and the battery may not be able to to deliver the peak current necessary to keep the processor stable.

A sign of a worn out battery is when the run time is very short, but a seemingly discharged battery will apparently come up to full charge in a few minutes. At this point the battery impedance is high enough that, even on the charger, there may not be enough peak current available to start up and keep things stable, and the run and charge times become so short that operating off the charger is not practical.

Make sure that all of the contacts are clean.

I like the Prontos and they are still one of my favorite remotes, but beyond battery replacement, I'm reluctant to send the units out for repair. There could be multiple problems occurring at multiple times and shortly after fully resolving one issue, another issue will pop up. gopronto would be a good resource here because he sees so many units. The question is "fundamentally, do these symptoms suggest simple battery failure?" I'd hate to see you lay out the funds for a battery replacement only to discover that you now have a "brick" with a fresh battery.

Hello buzz.
Thank you for your reply.
Nice theory with the lacking peak impedance of the battery. But how do you explain that I see things while updating the firmware?  While updating the firmware although connected to USB slot the Pronto is only provided by battery power.
I think I will try to change the battery. Cost of 20 € only. It is worth the try.

If not using extenders, then back the firmware down to the PEP2 firmware. Yet to be proven - I believe that if your configuration does not use overlays, then there should be no issue running it on the PEP2 firmware.

Let me know if all of this works. I just received a "broken" TSU9400. I know that the main board isn't working. However, the screen and touch screen may still work. If downgrading on firmware and what not demean not to work. Let me know and I'll swap the board in my two TSU9400 for testing to see if the screen works.

Then we can talk about me sending you a working screen.

I changed the battery with a new one. No improvement. Does anybody have a way out of this dilemma?

Did you 'reload the firmware' or do a 'complete firmware reload' otherwise known as 'Repair'?

I know GoPronto instructed to search site on how to do this. Just checking if that is what you did?

if you power off the unit and then within 3 seconds of powering it back on, Hold Firm2, Firm3, Firm4 simultaneously, this will put the unit into 'complete firmware' mode. Note that this will erase any configuration on the unit so don't do this if you don't have a backup of your XCF file stored somewhere on the computer.

You say the touchscreen works cause you hear a beep when you press it. Try this.

Create a small config with a single button on the home page that fills the entire screen.

From this button, Jump to an activity and put in the Activity List a Sound of Error.wav or something like that.

That way, you can determine that all is working except the screen.
