Although, in the "good old days" Sony was known for occasionally screwing things up, especially with DVD players. I seem to recall the DVP-S500D having no functional discrete codes - although it did actually respond to the main Sony "system off" code properly (anyone ever use that one these days?)
I won't put a unit on display (or a clients) without a firm update. That was step one after plugging it in. And, as multiple installers are having issues, I can't imagine we all "forgot" to firm update.
