I know you already have the hardware but instead of using TSTAT and CHV-RTS why not install C2N-RTHS, These connect to the Cresnet network rather than trying to connect to TSTAT.
On the other hand yes you can power a TSTAT using a 24V transformer (we have used a Phoenix/Omron 24V 5A PS in the past). We also place a 3A fuse after the PS to ensure we don't exceed class 2 wiring specs.
