I really do have to wonder what drives some people to want to use TV speakers when they have a proper audio system set up.
If he's doing it because he thinks the crummy speakers won't bug anyone else, then maybe another solution is to give him a "nighttime mode" on the AVR, perhaps only in stereo.
Right now the speakers on the AVR aren;t great and his wife doesn;t like the sub on. She doesn't use the AVR at all and thinks TV sounds better
