At the start of the TV series it says it's based on a true story.
The movie's main character was William H. Macy as a car salesman. Wow, did he put his miserable face to good use in that movie! And in the movie, the sheriff is about seven months pregnant.
In the series the main character is an insurance salesman. The sheriff's is a man and his wife is pregnant.
But it doesn't say it's based on two true stories, only on one, so we have a bit of an idea how loose "based on" is.
