Back in the sixties, the "Free Speech Movement" was started at UC Berkeley. At that time, Reagan had come down hard on Angela Davis, not wanting her to speak at any of the UCs. My opinion was that ideas should be heard -- if they were crap they would be found to be crap, but the only way to do that was to listen, to expose oneself to alternate ideas.

Actually started well before Angela Davis.
I needed to refresh my well-worn memory so pardon me if I quote wikipedia.
"On September 14, 1964, Dean Katherine Towle announced that existing University regulations prohibiting advocacy of political causes or candidates, outside political speakers, recruitment of members, and fundraising by student organizations at the intersection of Bancroft and Telegraph Avenues would be "strictly enforced." (This strip was until then thought to be city property, not campus property.)"
So when former Freedom Rider participants set up tables to recruit supporters and donations to carry on the civil rights efforts started that summer the campus and city police moved in and arrested several people.
That's what led to students taking over campus offices forcing the administration to change the policy.
And the rest is history ...
The Free Speech movement - started by liberals.

They call me the "Thread Killer". Just watch!
