It sounds like the AppleTV is in sleep mode. This will happen now and again.
Have him turn the entire system off, turn everything back on. and go to APpleTV. Once he goes to APpleTV go to
Settings->General->Sleep After->
Repeatedly press the select button until it says Never.
I beleive the choices are 1hr, 5hr, 10hr, Never.
Select Never.
Problem solved.
