I use tapcons or anchors. I put tapcons into the brick not the mortar. If the client want's to keep the brick "safe" i epoxy concrete anchors into the mortar. Drill the hole, clean out the hole, squeeze epoxy in the hole, insert anchor and tap the pin to expand the back (holds it in tight). The anchors let me use machined lag bolts to hold the mount.

Anytime i find something mounted incorrectly i fix it. Every hotel room im in i fix the towel & TP hardware because its always falling out of the wall. I carry all sorts of fasteners in my car. I fix something at someones house at least once a week. By the time i die most of the Chicago area will have everything mounted securely.
