The rules are like this (of course the first link is hacked to prevent link detection):

hxxp://vvv.remotecentral.com/ =
http://www.remotecentral.com/ (full URL retaining http due to short length)

hxxp://vvv.remotecentral.com/video/index.html =
[Link: remotecentral.com] (shortened, http:// & www. also removed)

hxxp://files.remotecentral.com/ =
http://files.remotecentral.com/ (full URL again due to short URL)

hxxp://files.remotecentral.com/pronto/index.html =
[Link: files.remotecentral.com] (shortened, http:// removed, subdomain retained)

vvv.remotecentral.com =
www.remotecentral.com (full URL, detected due to www. pattern, but I don't re-add the http:// part)

vvv.remotecentral.com/video/index.html =
[Link: remotecentral.com] (detected without http:// and shortened like earlier example)

files.remotecentral.com =
files.remotecentral.com (not detected as a link)

If you hover your cursor over a shortened link, there's a tooltip that will display the full URL. These rules apply to all links in posts, signatures, and elsewhere on the site where I've integrated my latest matching routines.

Plus, any link that ends with a valid image file extension such as .jpg, .png or .gif will be automatically modified to display the image in the post.

All of this was done to A) make things neater - no danger of run-on links, and B) prevent people from copying and pasting bad URLs. The display portion of URLs have always been shortened when they exceeded a certain length, however it was done like this:

hxxp://vvv.remotecentral.com/rev...uch/photo03a.jpg

The problem is people would highlight and copy the shortened URL with the "..." part, which was of course no longer valid. Now it's obvious they're going to have to right-click and copy the target, or visit the link first.

Originally I was going to convert ALL links to the [link:] format, but decided to leave simple short direct-domain links alone.

Finally, you can still display a full URL if you use the advanced editor and past the link using the link button. For example:

www.remotecentral.com/video/index.html

(But of course that doesn't work in signatures.)
