It does not need to be 5v.
From the PMC3 manual:
INPUT 1 – 2
(1) 3-pin 3.5mm detachable terminal block comprising (2) contact-closure or voltage-logic sensing inputs (referenced to GND);
Input Voltage Range: 0-24 Volts DC;
Logic Threshold: ≥1.2 Volts DC active/high, ≤0.46 Volt DC inactive/low;
Input Impedance: 2.2k Ohms pulled up to 5 Volts
