I am currently using the "universial" that comcast supplies with their DVR box and its not doing what I want. When I push the volume button it controls the volume on my TV, I want to to control the volume on my kenwood reciever. Being that I cant find any kind of documentation on the remote I think I am going to have to go with a universial (learning perhaps.) What suggestions does everyone have for such a problem. I dont really want to go spending alot of money as my 4 year old daughter somtimes uses the remote.......

Is the remote you received from Comcast one of the silvers one on this page (second, third, or fourth one)?

If it is you need to change to volume lock setting to make the volume control work with the receiver.

If you already found the code for your Kenwood receiver, you can change the way the volume keys work. The default setting is to have the TV control the volume for all the device modes, as you already found out. To set it to use the receiver:
1. Press and release AUX
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type 993
4. Press AUX
5. The AUX key will blink twice to confirm
Now the volume keys (Vol+, Vol-, and mute) will be controlled by the AUX device.

If you haven't found the device code to control the receiver, and you've already tried all the ones in the manual, there still might be a way. I need to know the model number of the receiver, and maybe I can find it.

My kenwood reciever is kinda old...its a Kenwood VR-505 ..... I tried the 993 code and it made the volume key not do anything at all...I guess thats what it was supposed to do....I did change it back to the TV volume is controlled by the remote until I get the code and instructions for making the reciever work for volume

Kenwood seems to be fairly consistent with the remote codes. Any one of the following listed in the remote's manual should work for at least the volume keys.

AUX/1313
AUX/1027
AUX/1570
AUX/1569
AUX/0027

To set the device code for AUX:
1. Press and release AUX
2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice
3. Type in the 4 digit number above
4. AUX key should blink twice to confirm

OK...thank you guys and gals for your help...it works perfectly.... one last question that somone might be able to answer...We have digital cable...and the back of my cable box has a optical out...the problem is that there is only one optical IN on my reciver...but there are 2 plugs which say digital but the plug looks like it would be some kind of RCA plug....what cable would I need and would it sound any better than the left and right RCA jacks that I am using now...more or less what I am looking for is the best sound I can get out of my cable box to my reciver without using the optical.

I just looked...its a Digital Coaxial x 2 on the back....would this allow me to get the same sound as if I was playing a DVD?

Yes this will allow you to get digital sound out of your receiver from your cable box. As long as your receiver can produce digital sound of course (ie Dolby digital, DTS etc)

I have the VR-505 as well but I have the comcast remote that uses a 5 digit code to program the devices. I have tried all of the ones provided by comcast but none of them work. Are there others I could try?

31313 really should work (as should 31570) for at least volume and power. Are you sure you're assigning the setup code correctly?

Press AUX
Press Setup until 2 blinks
Enter 31313
The remote should blink twice. Does it?
