I have a Phillips learning remote.

After 6 months it gets dirty and, the pad needs to be cleaned !

After that it goes downhill.

Please recommend a brand that will last for about 6 years,

6 years with heavy use AND inexpensive learner... not much comes to mind. I certainly can't guarantee that any remote is going to work for 6 years, regardless of how much it costs.

Another cheap learner is the Sony RM-VL600 or RM-VL610, but with heavy use they'll likely end up with the same problem in a few years. Even expensive hard buttoned remote will occasionally have the contacts wear out or get dirty, though they'll probably last longer initially.
