I want to have a lightswitch that control an outlet across the room without having to run a wire. X10 sounded perfect, but they said the only way to do that is to get a transceiver to plug into the outlet across the room and use a remote control (held in your hand). What I want is an actual light switch that I can put in the switch panel as you enter the room. Is there a product like this? Thanks, Dave

Thanks, Dave X10 makes a 3 button wireless slimline switch SS13A, you will also need a TM751 Transceiver, for your outlet you will either need an SR227 which will replace your existing outlet or you could use either an AM466 appliance module or if you are going to control a lamp an LM465 module

Sounds great! Do these things break often (ie is it worth getting the warranty?)

Unless they have improved the SR 227 outlet since I last used one, which has been rather a long time, the relay makes a rather loud Click when turned on which some people, including me, might find objectionable.

It still does make a loud click Sounds like another example of X-10's value engineering. They don't do much engineering and the customer does not get much value. I am far from an EE, but there are certainly ways to switch power without using a relay that can be heard in the next room.

I am far from an EE, but there are certainly ways to switch power without using a relay that can be heard in the next room. X-10 devices and the PC switch mode power supply are neck-and-neck for the award in cost reduction to the point of pain while apparently completing UL testing without generating smoke. But to be fair the relay-based modules were designed to function with a mechanically latching relay such that the power state of the load persists across module power loss. A conventional latching relay with equivalent current carrying capacity would likely itself exceed the cost of an X-10 module. While non-volatile storage is pretty common these days in a ~$1 uC it wasn't back when X-10 was initially developed. Even if that wasn't an issue you wouldn't really want a 50-cent, 60Hz energized relay to be buzzing in the wall while the load was being powered. Also an energy and heat savings is realized by use of a latching mechanism. The click upon latch transitions can be annoying but it still seems to be a reasonable compromise given the set of design constraints.

By far and away the best solution is the Lutron Lighting made for URC. These unique lighing products (lamp switches and dimmers) give the use the ability to simply replace the current light/dimmer switch with one from URC and control it wirelessly with any of the URC compatable RF remotes. Scenes, discrete codes, and decorative covers in many colors round out the line. I have sold these to many of my customers and they are extremely happy. Yes, they are more expensive than X-10 or Levition products, but you get what you pay for in the reliability, quality and flexibility department. Anyone who has any questions feel free to send me an email. Vincent
