Client is looking to add some basic pool controls to existing system. Jandy RS interface is wired up and tried some basic funtions programmed into RTI system and and not getting any response from the Jandy. While I am nowhere near an RS-232 genius, I am pretty sure I am sending the proper string from the XP-8. I would like to confirm that with any of you that have actually implemented Jandy control into a project before.

TIA for any help you could offer!

Are you trying to send it with strings you made or are you using the RTI driver??

If your using 232 strings you typed, try using the driver in the system, will give you all the strings and feedback

Glack, I tryed both actually. I thought there may be an issues of them being part of a 2-way driver and this is only a 1-way system so I wasn't sure.

did you ensure that the RS232 adapter is properly attached to the extension cable? did you ensure that the extension cable is hooked up properly at the RS system or the last controller?

pool guys/electricians cant seem to grasp the color codes for the adapter......

Try attaching a PC/Laptop to it and see if you get anything. Confirm pin-outs.

How old is the Jandy RS unit? I ask this because we just recently did an interface on a remodel that had an existing jandy controller. We got the serial adapter in and all programmed but nothing worked. It turned out that the Jandy RS unit was not a current enough revision that supported external control. If you hook up to the jandy serial interface via hyperterminal and power cycle the jandy serial interface by pulling the 4 cond plug out for 5 seconds you will start to see messages in hyperterminal. If it says waiting for RS unit, the Jandy controller is too old or is not talking to the Jandy controller. It cost our client about $1000 to upgrade the controller from the pool company. Once this was upgraded the RTI driver worked great.

The system had the serial adapter from the original integrator on the project and I guess I should ask the client if it ever worked when I head back out to the house later today.

Thanks guys for all of the ideas and I will look into each of them. I would have tried hyperterminal yesterday but someone stole my USB to serial adaptor!

Okay, so I'm at the jobsite and hooked up the laptop to the Jandy serial adaptor and started using hyperterminal. I am able to control the state of various pool functions without issue using hyperterminal.

As an example they have a waterfall that is attached to Aux. 4. I send #AUX4=0 and it turns it on and #AUX4=1 turns it off. I then load the exact same string into ID and nothing. I have confirmed that the wiring on the cat5 leading to the Jandy device is correct. I know that the Jandy device is straight through and doesn't require a null modem adaptor. Just for grins I did temporarly install a null modem adaptor to to be sure. I am now at a complete loss! Any ideas guys???

So you can control the Jandy with your laptop. But the exact strings don't work from the XP8. How long is the wire run from the XP8 to the Jandy?

Can you control the Jandy from the XP-8 location with your laptop?

May have to use another DB-9 to RJ-45 to make the connection.

The run is about 15' end to end. I have a feeling that I know what the problem is now. While the exact codes do not work when coming from the XP-8, I think I MAY have forgotten to add a carriage return at the end of the string.

Even with that, I now think there may be a problem with the Jandy Serial Adaptor. My logic behind this is that I when using hyperterminal I am getting some very odd query responses that don't make any sense in relation to the command being sent to it. If this shit was easy we would all be out of a job!

Ask them when the OG installer configured the system and if it ever worked. I say this because 4-5 years ago jandy had some serious QC issues with the rs232 adapters. Some would blurt out some crazy things in HT. I mean, things thAt would make you think it had a mind of its own. I'm sure a few CI's remember.......

Unfortunately Jandy didnt stand behind their product, and refused to replace them. As of now they are rock solid. *knock on wood*

Reviving an old thread. I have a new client and am about to wire my first Jandy controller. I can't find a diagram that shows the best wiring configuration. Can anyone help?

I need to connect an RTI-x8v to a Jandy RS aqualink.  Attached is a photo of the pinout for the Jandy.

Thanks

- Matt
