I have programmed a few systems with the marantz and have added the xm tuners...the only way I have figured out to get the channels to work is hitting the freq direct button first everytime before you change a channel...which is what I have done in my macros also....is there a more direct way? or is this how it needs to be done.

Nope, that's how you do it. Unless you're using rs232 - then you can send a discrete command for any specific station.
