I have a yamaha rxv2700 amp which is the heart of my setup. It is now 20 years old. Speakers are 3x front Aelite on wall 175w, 4x rear Q Acqustics, plus an Aegis Evo 140w sub. Now after playing movies / Xbox via HDMI outputs it turns off after an hour or so. I suspect it is overheating as it feels hot to the touch and after being off for a while it can be restarted. This does not seem to happen when playing music CD or vinyl discs.
I suspect it is time to replace it but i am retired now and cannot afford a high end replacement and don't want to lose the output this unit gives me (140W/channel)
I have been looking at a Yamaha Rxv6a which would be about top of my budget but will only give me 100w/channel output and of course it is not of the same build quality/spec as the rxv2700.
If i went for the Rxv6a is there anyway I could keep the rx2700 for music output and the new amp for movies video etc but using the same speaker setup. Or am I just complicating the problem and should just bite the bullet and accept a downgrade to the Rxv6a or an alternative. I would prefer to stick with Yamaha as the whole system is controlled by a philips Pronto 7600 and I have all the yamaha hex codes. It's hard to get modern hex codes as the pronto is obsolete.

Make sure that there are no recently developed ventilation issues — perhaps an accumulation of dust inside the unit.

Hi. Opened up and blown all dust etc away. It is in an open rack and ventilation has always been OK.

I’m not sure what to make of your symptoms. If this is a heat issue I think that CD’s and LP’s should also exhibit the issue. I suppose it’s possible that the surround amplifiers have a problem and you are using surround only for video.

Check your online sources — and the cable box. Some will shut down after a period if you don’t interact with them. This interval could be a user adjustable option. I’ve seen this interval to be only one hour in some cases. The services are trying to prevent you from playing content for pets while you’re out.

The video processing board creates a lot of heat. That is why your unit is shutting down with video and not with just audio. The thermal protection circuit has probably degraded over time and is now overly sensitive.

If you want to keep this amp going (note it only does 1080p & can't process any modern surround formats), then you could just use a cooling plate under it and probably get by a bit longer. Something like this = [Link: amazon.com]

If you do replace it = if you look at the history of the Yamaha AV lines over the last several years, I would be hesitant to recommend them at all. They have all the signs of a company in trouble (dropping more & more products, leaving thinner selections / more reliability problems, when previously they had none / etc.).
All their other ventures (music instruments, ATV & motorcycles, etc.) seem to be the only thing propping the AV up.

If you are trying to stay under $1K for a 7 channel setup, I would look at:
JBL MA710
Denon AVR-S980H

If you can stretch your budget to $1.5K then more options open up with Sony ES, Marantz, and a few others.

Right now is a bad time to need a new AV receiver. Prices have gone up significantly this last year or two.

Hi all. Thanks for all advice and comments. I'm going to try the cooling fan route to see if that stops it. If not will look at a replacement. Looking ahead if I replace whatbis opinions on ONKYO amps? Tbh not heard of them but seem to get decent reviews and are THX certified.

Onkyo was founded in 1946. They have been around a very long time. But note, they have been bought and sold many times in recent decades. Their upper brand is "Integra" but that is even higher in the budget.

My experience in installing Onkyo is, it can have quirks. I have one that does random input switching from volume commands (happens once about ever 2-3 months) this was on a TXR-Z830. But I will say that is the only issue I've seen out of 1/2 dozen I've installed in the last 10 years. Much better than Yamaha's almost 50/50 ratio of problems I've seen over the last 4 years (several that just died out of the box).

The THX certification doesn't really mean much. It's a marketing badge and the fact you mentioned it, means it's working.
Side note: I'm a "THX Technician II" installer (although I think the certification is called something else these days).
