Headphones have been for some time a step-child of home audio, which is unfortunate. There are some realy high quality headphones out there for two channel listenning. What are your favorite headphones? What headphone amp do you use to drive them?

It's a home audio topic just like any of the threads on turntables, radio reception, and SACD.

If there's not a separate audio forum, I can handle an occasional topic like this. At least it originated in this millenium.

Years ago, back in the kit days, I built a Dynaco PAT-5 preamp and AF-6 am/fm tuner, had a Dual 1229 turntable w/Shure V-15 type III cartridge, and built a pair of Southwest Technical Products, Inc.'s Universal Tiger amps to drive a pair of Rectilinear III Highboys.

Also, by SWTP, was another kit, a headphone amp for my Koss Pro-4 AAA 'phones. It was a pure Class-A amp, rated for a continuous 2 watts per channel. Running or idling, it was hot, as Class-A amps are. The sound was outstanding!

I'd love to find a similar headphone amp today. That would give me an excuse to buy a pair of headphones. Theater or not, audio has its place. Nobody says I have to use 'phones in a room that has speakers in it.

A 'phone-only audio system/room would be cool; recliner, 'fridge, microwave, black-light posters...hey, wait a minute! Where am I going??

Larry

Actually, I think you'd be surprised at how effective a good pair of headphones can be, particularly when it comes to late night/early hours viewing.

Both Grado and Senheiser make excellent headphones.
