It depends on the binding post for the speaker. Some manufactures such as vandersteen do not allow for wire to directly connect with speaker as with models that have 5 way binding posts, like most high end amplifiers. With speakers like that he includes bannana plugs. Most binding post speaker wire connections allow you to use spade lugs which should be soldered onto your wire using vampire wire solder or best grade radio shack. This method is clean and allows serviceability. It is what most pros do. The big aftermarket bannana plugs such as vampire wire are great for bare wire connection. It is not recommended the wire is tinned before it is inserted in hole and then tightend down with screw. The solder doesn't yeild therefor creating an inferior connection. Less metal to metal contact. Therefore stripping the wire and leaving it bare is best except if you live on the beach and like to leave the door open. Most high end oxygen free wire corrodes within weeks if it is exposed to air, leaving it brittle and fragile. And of course if your talking about the umentionable brands that use 16 guage wire spring connectors the old strip, twist and insert seems to work best.

I can't believe no one has mentioned one of the

best connectors for 12 gauge, fine strand wire:

Radio Shack 278-306 screw compression banana plug!

I prefer the 278-307. It's a solder on locking style banana plug. I always use silver solder to put them on with due to conductivity concerns.

My next set of speaker wires will use only the
best
Banana and spade connectors available (WBT) and
they
will also be silver soldered. I am waiting till
I get
my 4 Monoblock Amps and my Tube Preamp before
I make

up a Bi-Amp set of cables.

If you're going to pay for WBT terminals, you may as well spring for the crimp connections and the crimper. Most audiophiles will only use oxygen free crimp connections and spade terminals.

Personally though, I use Niles Audio screw down bananas.
