Hello all knowing. I'm trying to get my Comcast DVR (DCT 3412 1) remote to control the volume of my brand new Sony Home Theatre system (DAV-HDX589W). I've tried programing every 5 digit code that comcast has for sony products at least 3 times now with no luck. I talk to sony support, they say it is comcast ... I talk to comcast, they say I need to get the codes from sony.

HELP!!!

There is no built in code to control your HT. So, it's gonna take some work on your part, but you can manually enter in the Extended Function Codes (EFC) for any function on the below list (taken from a DAV-HDX500) and assign it to a key of your choosing. First use setup code 31758, presumably on the AUX button. Assign any of the functions in the list by following the 994 EFC keymove instructions here: www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php.

You can test the functions (which is quicker) by pressing setup and then entering the EFC.  The remote will send the command when the last digit is keyed in, and hopefully your HT system will respond.  Try this first with an obvious function like Vol+.  The functions listed (including the number keys) below which don't have an associated EFC can't be sent with the Comcast remote.

I spoke too soon ...yes, now when I press the aux button, it will control the volume on the HT, but when I try to program the same keys on the "cable" button (so I don't have to switch to aux everytime I want to adjust the volume), it won't take. I go through the same procedures, but it will not work with the cable volume buttons. The light blinks twice and it looks like it will work, but no dice.

These remotes have a feature called Volume Punch Through. Most cable boxes have no useful volume function, and the remote is setup by default to make the Vol+, Vol-, and Mute buttons actually control the TV device. You probably can notice the TV button lighting up when you press one of those buttons while in CBL mode.

Change the VPT to point at the AUX device.

Press Setup until 2 blinks
Enter 993 (should get 2 blinks)
Press AUX (AUX should blink twice)

Now pressing Vol+, Vol-, or Mute in any device mode will act as if the remote were in AUX mode.

This programming is described in the remote's instruction sheet, downloadable from www.urcsupport.com/index.php.

BTW, trying to assign those EFCs to the cable button wouldn't have worked even if VPT were disabled, because the EFCs are chosen to work with the 31758 code rather than the 01376 setup code on the CBL button.  You would need to first temporarily setup 31758 on the cable button, do the 994 EFC assignment, and then restore the 01376 setup code.  And to change the CBL setup code, the Cable Lock feature would need to be disabled using 982.    (Comcast doesn't want you to accidentally change that CBL setup code.)

Thank you.

I didn't list the EFCs for quite a few of the functions, because a stock Comcast remote with a red Select/OK button simply can't generate Sony IR signals which are sent to device 16.16, so while the EFCs are known, you can't use them. Well, you could enter them in, but unless you have a Sony DVD changer, they won't do anyting.

Your choices are to get a grey button Comcast remote (a downgrade for the most part), buy a remote that has setup code Audio 1658, 1858 or Video 1903, 1981, or get a JP1 cable which would allow you to upload an upgrade to your Comcast remote.

The JP1 cable costs $35 shipped. The most obvious replacement remote is the RCA RCRP05B ($20 at Best Buy) but there are quite a few older models which will fit the bill, including Atlas remotes provided by many other cable companies. A OneForAll URC-8820 or 10820 is another fairly new remote which will work.

The JP1 cable offers the most flexibility. For example, a Comcast remote actually has 4 devices built-in, even though there are only CBL, TV and AUX buttons. I control 6 components with a Comcast remote, by using all 4 devices. And you don't have to enter a bunch of 5 digit EFCs; you just send them in from a computer file. Of course, there is a learning curve as you find out all the possible ways you can set up a remote.

My sony device does have a DVD changer, do you think I would have better luck(without buying the cable or another remote)?

Thanks so much!

Here's where to get the information I'm using.

1) Sony codes. hifi-remote.com/sony.  The Comcast remotes can send any 12 or 15 bit protocol command.  For 20 bit commands, it can send 26.73 and 26.98, 26.250, 26.11, and 25.11.  Actually, it can send any ??.73, for example, where ?? stands for a number between 0 and 31, but probably only 16 and 26 have utility for your system.

2) The capability of the remote is shown at www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/lookup/.  A red button Comcast is a 1067BX3 JP1.3 remote, and the protocol you are interested in is Sony 12/15/20 Combo.

3) I get the EFCs from a program called RemoteMaster v 1.97, available free at www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewforum.php, using this upgrade www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php.  The upgrade is a little tricky to use, because it arranged the subdevices as 16, 73, but setup code 31758 is arranged as 73, 98.

Now, in looking up these links, I noticed that Sony receivers use the 12 bit protocol, device 13 to send tuner commands.  You may want to try EFCs Preset+ 35445 and Preset- 34421.  It might work.

Thank you for this! I got the basics set up (volume, play, pause, power) and just need to set up forward and rewind (more of an issue when playing my ipod through the system than anything else). I didn't see a code that seemed to relate to forward (fast forward, next, whatever) or rewind (back). Do you happen to know what I should use?

Thanks again for the help!

Well, perhaps it isn't obvious, but based on unofficial information (see item 1 in post #9), the IR signals needed to send e.g. rewind to a Sony HT system can't be generated using a Comcast remote. I've tried to explain why in posts #7 and #9. #7 mentions a few other remotes which will work.

If you want to experiment, you could try the Sony codes for DVD players. To do that, you can use AUX setup code 20533 (assuming you have a red OK/Select button). Any button for which you've already done a 994 keymove will still send the IR signal specified by the keymove. Other buttons will send Sony DVD signals.

Hello,

Please excuse me as I am a "newbie", but is there another code for "Open/Close" for the Sony HTIB (to use w/the Comcast "red" button remote)?

I have tried the code 35228, but this does not seem to work. Also, any other possible tricks to get the FF/RW for DVD function to work?

P.S. Thanks so much for all the other codes, this was a nightmare until I found this thread!!!

Really, the best way to get these functions to work is to invest $20 in a different remote. The RCA-RCRP05B, OneForAll URC-8820 or 10820 remotes are all less than $20. The RCA can be picked up at BestBuy, and all are available through the Internet.

Use Setup code Audio 1658 (with these remotes, drop the leading 3 from the setup codes).
I think that nearly all the functions will work without entering EFCs, but the remotes use the same sort of EFC programming as the Comcast remote. If you do buy one of these, the above EFCs will still work, but we'll have to post the EFCs for device 16.16 functions. Let us know if we need to post them.

Thanks 3FG,

Currently I have three remotes programmed for my living room system:

(Sony HT-C800DP Home Theater "In A Box", Samsung LCD TV, w/Motorola HD cable box).

I have the "older" Comcast (w/grey OK button) set up, runs all TV functions, but limited DVD functions.

I have programmed the newer "red button" model w/the above EFC codes, and this enjoys much wider functions (except FF/RW for DVD).

I also have an Atlas 1056BG01, which does even more; w/above programming it does everything except "Open/Close". If I could get this last code to enter, I could make this remote "user friendly" for the family. I would love to program a macros to switch from TV to DVD, and have it do everything including open the tray!

Thanks for your help, I'll look at the recommended remotes. Any good learning remotes you recommend?

The remotes I recommended above are learning remotes.

However, you have an Atlas! It should have setup code Audio 1658 built-in. All of the above codes should work also work with 1658, just like they do with 1758. In addition, the following EFCs should work with 1658, but not 1758.
