I seem to have no problem learning 2 or 3 commands into the pre-existing keys.
However on the labels try as I might I can't even get two commands learned.
Is this normal or do I have a strange remote? I seem to read that it's possible to have more than one command in all of the keys and I assumed that includes labels at the bottom of a device screen.

I'm not sure what to suggest -- I just tried learning two commands and it took OK. Make sure you have very very short pauses between commands.
