Sony's 1-800 tech support line couldn't answer the question. hopefully someone here can. looking for the least expensive option that will control the tuner as completely as possible.
thanks. :)

Hmm, I think the lowest Sony remote that specifically lists "Tuners" as a preprogrammed code is the RM-AV2100 or RM-AV3000 (although I do believe that the base numbers/scanning codes are the same as Sony receivers).
However, if you have the original remote, any learning model can be taught those codes (like the RM-VL700).

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into those remotes.
This tuner is an ES and did NOT come with its own remote. It was supposed to be available as an accessory but there isn't one specific to the tuner.

This may be a dumb question, but are you sure you can control the tuner with a remote? The manual makes no reference anywhere to a remote, and the picture of the front of the receiver doesn’t show an IR window. It would seem that everything made these days would be remote operated, but maybe this is an exception. The 3000 lists codes for Receiver/Amplifier, but I didn’t see any for tuners specifically. Let me know if I am guessing wrong here.

I thin kit is actually stated on the product page of the Sony web site.
I've had some code pages where one or two buttons work and make the tuner react (might have been just the ability to switch between preprogrammed statios).
shine a flashlight into the main display window and you'll see what appears to be the IR reciver. it's to the far left of the window and just above the "Display" and "Shift" buttons. there's also something at the far right of the display window but the one on the left looks more like an IR sensor to my eye.

The AV2100 shows code 001 for tuners, and when you load it on the tuner key, you get a different screen than the screen on the receiver key when you use receiver code 001, so you may get some functionality from the 2100. There are not too many keys on the tuner screen, but if you can at least get power and channel change functions it will be better than nothing. It is the only remote I have found that still retains a tuner designation, so that is the one you may have to use. I checked some Radio Shack and OFA remotes and none of them showed anything for a tuner alone. I didn’t think that a modern device would not have remote capability, but I was puzzled by a lack of reference to a remote in the manual. Good luck, I hope you can get it to work.

JUst checked our the service manual, there is indeed an IR receiver on the front panel control board. I would thiunk any receiver remote woiuld work the unit as the commands would be the same.

I'm just wondering about remote power - do tuners and receivers use the same power codes?

Well, the 2000 has an actual tuner code, so it should work fine.

just reporting back with my findings on this.
I borrowed an RM-AV2000 from a friend and programmed in the tuner button. the only buttons that work are 1 through 0 and these correspond to the channel presets. The Band button also works. Power buttons do NOT do anything nor do any of the other buttons. Oh well. Better than nothing. I learned these codes into my MX500.
