Hi,

My remote died and I need a new one for my Sony STR-DE475 receiver. Would most Universal remotes work? If it would work with my Sharp TV and Samsung DVD that would be a plus. I'd like to not spend too much, maybe $30 or less. Thanks for the advice.

If you can get a OneForAll 8810W at Walmart, around $18, it should work well for you.

All universal remotes require quite a bit of learning on the receiver component, because none are preprogrammed with everything you need to operate your receiver.

Since you cannot learn, you will need to use advanced codes, and possibly even jp1.

You can click here to learn about advanced/discrete codes.

Ron,

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if any of the universal remotes sold by Sony might already have more preprogramming for my sony receiver.

Probably not, and you will almost certainly want to add some more commands, which as said before you can't do without the original remote. Also, you can't get a Sony learning remote for the $30 limit you set, so if you decided later on to get the 8810 or another remote capable of advanced codes, it wouldn't do you any good without a learning remote.

If you were talking of any other component but a receiver, I would say you could use most universal remotes, but receivers are much more complex, so they don't have a full set of preprogrammed commands when using the preset codes.

Ron,

Thanks for the advice. I do not have a walmart close, so I have tried an RS 15-2116.
This does not allow for code 0158. It also does not allow for code 1441 which is the the code that matches my unit according to Rshelp.
Instead, I used setup code 1058 for the receiver, which allowed for most basic functions. It did not however allow me to switch to my dvd player. Edmond helped me with that. He suggested I use tape code 0243 and then map the advanced code (I used 124). Then I switched back to rcvr1058 and this worked. I am still trying other codes to see if I can find any for switching between AFD/2 CH/ Surround Modes.
Jumping into jp1 is on hold for the moment, although it sounds interesting
