What you are doing is using the Advanced/Discrete codes from this listing
[Link: hifi-remote.com], or the listing for setup codes 0060 or 0154 for your Toshiba TV.
Any of these codes can easily be taught to your 3100. When using advanced codes, no signal is sent until the last digit is pressed, so when you press SET, 0 - 1, nothing happens until you sent the third digit, in this case, 4, then the signal is sent to your 3100, so put your 3100 in learn mode, press SET-0-1-4, and when you press the 4, the 3100 should beep and the signal should have been learned. Just be sure to press the keys fast enough so that the 3100 doesn't time out of the learn mode, or you can press set-0-1, then press the key you want to learn on, and then press the 4.
There are many useful advanced/discrete codes that you can use, either in macros or to access a command which is absent on the original remote. If you think you would like to be able to use these codes for your TV or other components, you can return the 8910 and get an 8810 at Walmart for $18.
