1. if Sony STR-DB930 (comes with RM-LJ302)can be controlled with universal remote?

2. What are the key differences for MX-500 and VL1000?

You can control your receiver with any good universal remote. You will have to learn some commands because no component code comes preprogrammed with everything you will need.
You do not have to worry about AV1/AV2 command codes because I don’t believe your receiver has this function, so you are ready to go right out of the box.

I am not familiar with either the MX500 or VL1000. The main difference is about $50. Go here to see both http://www.surfremotecontrol.com/ They appear very similar to me. The VL1000 is basically the same as the RM-AV3000 without the large touch screen, and I am familiar with the AV3000, which would work very well for you.
