Can I set the VL900 to send different signals to switch my components on and off rather than the on/off toggle signal? If so how?

Only if you use discrete codes. See this thread to get started [Link: remotecentral.com]

That sounds great, but how do I get my VL900 to accept discrete codes?

Read the thread referenced above. Even though it refers to the AV3000, the procedures are the same for the VL900. Basically, you get a RS/OFA remote, assign a device code, press the setup button, press the 3 digit advanced code, and send that to the VL900 in learn mode.

Thanks Ron, it's off the the shops then. Trouble is though, Radio Shack / Tandy don't trade in the UK anymore (I think). It's a long shot but do you know where I can the OFA from?

The URC-7562, which should be available in the UK (I have answered several threads from UK residents with this remote) will also work, as will others. For a list of remotes which will work with advanced codes, go here [Link: hovisdirect.com] Also, the Robman from the OFA forum (email address [email protected] ) sometimes has RS remotes available, but I don’t know what’s involved in shipping them to the UK.
