I've been researching and specing exactly what I need to accomplish with the AV3000 prior to purchase. Having spent most of my working life designing, specing, programming and installing business computer systems I need to dot the i's and cross the t's before making a decision. I know I can get a 30 day return policy (or 90 day by spending a little more at Walmart on line) but I'd rather be reasonably sure of success before expending all the effort.

I'm not sure I understand the significance of device codes vs command codes as published here:

[Link: anycities.com]

Example:

Trying to match up functions for a KV-34XBR910 TV I find that many of the functions performed by the RM-Y188 remote fall under different device codes and, in this case, Command Code 66 performs three different functions depending on which Device Code it is listed under.

Device Code 1

64 Video 1 (discrete), Line A, Line
65 Video 2 (discrete), Line B
66 Video 3 (discrete), VTR
71 Video 4 (discrete)
72 Video 5 (discrete), YUV
73 Video 6 (discrete), FM

Device Code 164

66 Wide

Device Code 151

66 Video 7 (DVI) (discrete)

For now only video 5, 6, and 7 are of concern in this example.

A simple explanation for an old, tired brain would be greatly appreciated.

Different subject: Is my old Radio Shack 15-1992 an All In One that I can use to learn and then teach the discrete codes?

Those codes are OBC's, what you need is EFC's(advanced codes). And yes your 15-1992 should work.

Please try and forget everything about command codes, device codes, etc., for the things you are trying to do with the 3000 at this time. You are making this unnecessarily complicated. You will be dealing with discrete codes, which are different from the codes you mention.

You can use the 1992 to send the discrete commands to the 3000, which is good for video 5 (discrete code 162) and video 6 (discrete code 158). For video 7, you would have to send the discrete code for video 6 (158), and then quickly hit the tv/video button on your original remote before the 3000 beeps. This will make a micro-macro (which I explained in another of your threads) for video 7.

Just got back to this today. Thanks to Edmund and Ron for getting me back on track. Sorry for using the same example as before, Ron, but at least it proved I was using the wrong approach to get the codes. You saved me a lot of frustration.

I have just bought a Yamaha RX-V2300 A/V receiver and I have been unable to get the current codes for yamaha to work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For what remote?? If it is a learning remote, you should get the basic procedures and will have to learn the rest. If you don't get any procedures, learn everything.
