I just received a SONY RM-VL1000. For some reason, the codes for the SONY STR-DE685 AMP won't work at all. I've tried various codes and the same thing happens: Nothing.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have an AV3000 remote with the same receiver. Set the receiver and your original remote to AV1 (Under Settings on the receiver and Use Mode + AV1 on the remote), and you should be able to program and use the VL1000. Sony defaults it to AV2
I read this off another thread, so can't take credit for the solution.

I can understand why Sony would add a second control set, but I can't for the life of me figure out why they'd make it the default.

This also worked for my STR-985 with my RM-2100 remote control. Thank you. I found this default very annoying too. I wonder what they thought the advantage was.

Ok, what then was the code that worked? Then entire thread never mentions the code!
I bought a Sony RM-VZ220 remote that expected would work on my STR-DE685 Sony Receiver but every code I try has no effect.
Help from anyone appreciated
