I really hate the remote control that came with my General Instruments Digital Cable box. It is made by One for All, and has channel number buttons that are cut out in the shape of the number. I don't think I am alone in disliking that feel. This "new" remote would go in the bedroom, where nighttime viewing is generally done in a darkened room.

All I need to control are the functions of the cable box, and the volume, power and muting of a Sony television.

I would like to buy a remote that has the following features.

-- Learning Capability, so that I can put all the commands on one "page" of the remote.

-- Backlight or glowing buttons.

-- Low cost. I would rather not spend $50 or $60 to replace a remote that is only used for short term channel surfing at bedtime.

Thanks for any comments on this situation.

You should look at the Radio Shack RS-1994. It goes on sales regularly for $30. It is a full-learning remote, even though the manual won't tell you that. However, you can learn everything you need to know about, including where to get advanced codes, from this site.

Please go and check out the Forum titled Universal Remote Controls on this site. ... Mike

Dear Mike,

You are absolutely right. I bought the Radio Shack 15-1994 today, on sale for $29.95. It fit the requirements I needed to a "T". I was able to teach it all the functions I needed to, and was totally shocked to see that they state you have to use one of the four "Smart Keys" for customized commands, but in fact, button accepts learned commands.

Thank you very much for the referral. I would have never suspected it had this capability, especially since even their literature in their catalog as well as the operators manual states nothing of the sort.

Missed a word, should read:

"but in fact, ANY button accepts learned commands."
