I tried the three codes identified in the code manual supplied with the remote (037, 018, 019.) None of them worked. Any suggestions?

I can't be sure, but your set may be one of Pioneer's high frequency devices. However, even if that's the case, it should still work with the default 40kHz codes -- which the VL900/AV2100 should have built in.
