I am using a JDS IR eXpander to control Sony AV equipment and I need discrete on and off codes.

I have a Sony AV2000 and have read the manual (such as it is), searched the threads here and read Daniel’s excellent programming information (Sony should hire him to write their manuals).

I see from the information written by Daniel how I can get discrete ON codes from the AV2000 to learn to the IR eXpander but if there is a way to send discrete OFF commands, I sure missed it.

I know the AV2000 contains them because it sends OFF commands to each component after holding the Commander Off button for three seconds.

Help would sure be appreciated.

Thank you, Jim.

The exact same procedure applies to "off" codes -- you've got to catch the right code during the macro.

Hi Daniel,

The procedure that I used to get the discrete ON codes was to follow the instructions in the section that you wrote titled Sony Component Power On and then just learn the code by pressing the component button on the AV2000 and learning the IR output to the IR eXpander.

I am not exactly sure what you are saying about the OFF codes but it sounds like you are suggesting that I capture the individual ones from the stream of a dozen or so that are sent after holding the Commander Off button for three seconds and then releasing it.

If so, I don't think I am fast enough to do that.

If it is not possible to obtain the discrete OFF codes from the AV2000 is there any other remote that I could use to learn them from?

Thank you for your help and thank you for such a wonderful site as Remote Central.

Regards, Jim.

You can obtain it, but you've got to do it through the macro. :-) It can be done, I did a number of them a while back.

If all you are trying to do is teach Sony's discrete off commands to the JDS IR eXpander, you may find some luck with the Cinema 7 or Radio Shack 15-1994.

I entered the device codes for my Sony devices. Then I keyed the discrete on code 113 into the programmable key for the devices I wanted to power on. The discrete off code is 109.

More specific info is here:
[Link: hifi-remote.com]

I used the 15-1994 which was on sale for $30 to teach the discrete on's to my $50 Sony RM-VL900. You can get a cheaper remote that can generate the discrete codes. I think the 15-1993 or Cinema 7 can be had for $20.

Daniel - Thank you for the help - and providing such a great site as Remote Central - it is just super and has the best message facilities of any board I have seen on the Net - nicest graphics too - plus a bunch of nice people here too.

With respect to learning the codes from the AV2000, your reflexes are much better than mine :)

Joe - Thank you for the help and the tips on the 113 and 109 codes - I bought a 15-1994 and learned the commands to my JDS IR-iXpander - I don't think I would have figured out how to do it though without the information at hifi-remote about programmong an AUX key for a DVD - as usual, the manufacturer's manual is lacking.

Before I had the discrete OFF commands I used a 'all components off' code that I got from my receiver's remote to put all components in a known state and then sent the discrete ON commands - it worked but it was ugly - now everything works slick.

It seems crazy that I have a house full of Sony remotes and had to buy a Radio Shack remote to get a few codes I needed and then get info from the net to know how program it fully -- crazy.

Anyway, thanks again folks - Jim.
