how to use blank spaces?!!!

i have just bought the sonay rm av2000t and am unsure as how to program buttons to the blank spaces, is it possible, otherwise i shall probably take it back!!!

If the AV-2000 programs in the same manner as the AV-2100, any and all used and unused positions are custom programmable. If you want to use a position that is presently blank, press and hold COMMANDER OFF and press the Component Select button for the screen you want. Then press and hold the Component Select button while you press the space where you want to add a learned key. With each press of the blank button, it will scroll throught the label options for that particular key. When you get to the label you want to have that key designated, you're able to LEARN the command to that key. Aim the two remotes head to head, and press the key on the teaching remote at the AV-2000.

The AV2000 doesn't let you select label, but you can learn to all blank spaces.
