Help!

I just got a Sony WEGA XBR400, which comes with an RM-Y174 remote. There is no listed code for the TV86 cable box in the WEGA documentation. Any clues if the Sony remote can be used with this cable box.

Thanks.

Probably not. If you have the time you can try all cable box codes possible, but generally Sony's code database is only about 80% complete.

Daniel:

Thanks for your response. Is there any universal remote that you would recommend that could be used wih the Sony WEGA, TV86, and Aiwa DVD/MP3 370 Player and a Mitsubishi VCR ? (The two troublesome components seem to be the TV86 and Aiwa DVD.)

Do you not have the original remote(s) to learn from?

I do have the original remotes from all of the components, but I was trying to avoid having to buy yet another (universal-learning) remote to learn the codes. If I have to, which one would you suggest?

Well, I think you may have to buy a learning remote. Right now, to keep costs down, you could go for a Sony RM-VL900.

I called Sony and actually found someone who was knowledgable and helpful, however, she suggested I try punching in codes for the TV86 cable box. She suggested staying within the RM-Y174 code range for other cable boxes-- after trying about 25 3 digit sequences-I finally hit on one that worked-- 218!

What brand is that actually for?

The cable box is a TV86. The RM-Y174 has a problem remembering the code entered, however. It does not seem to be a long term solution for unifying the remotes. I will check out the Sony RM-VL900.

BTW- This is a great website!

Who or where did you call at Sony where they had a knowledgable person about codes? I'd like to find out if my PP401 can control a GI/Jerrold cable box.

I called the customer service number on the web site. Couldn't get through on the toll free line, but had to use the pay number. After being on hold for 19 minutes, I got someone who was not too swift- she eventually put on her supervisor who seemed to be able to answer some questions. The only reason IU went through this was because I wasn't paying for the call and left the waiting on speakerphone. After talking with this person and concluding that the RM-Y174 to TV86 cable box code was not supported, I decided to spring for the $40 & get the VL-900 learning remote from the vstore.
