I have new Sony RM-AV2100 remote. I've had little or no trouble programming all the components of my system. Except my Sony receiver! Let me say that again - SONY RECEIVER and SONY REMOTE. Should be a slam dunk, right? OK, so the receiver is a model STR-DE805G. This has a small, egg-shaped IR transmitter that controls volume and a "swivel-rotating" thumb-button that controls an on-screen cursor. It was an attempt to make receiver control easier and make it more computer "mouse-like" - it didn't catch on. However, it works pretty good. I wouldn't even mind having the egg and the 2100, but I would like to program some of the egg functions into the 2100 - mainly on-off and input selection . The Sony AMP codes don't work, "learning" doesn't work, and searching doesn't come up with anything. I tried some codes from the hifi-remote.com page (0158, 0159 or 158, 159) but these just made the 2100 squeal. Anybody have any suggestions? The egg really only has volume up and down and cursor up-down-left-right - that's only five commands (six because you have to have an "enter"). I know there is (or was) a standard remote control for this machine but they cost a couple of hundred dollars - more than twice what I paid for the 2100. Doesn't seem cost effective to me.

Thank you Mr. Tonks. I thought I had thoroughly explored your web site for this answer BEFORE I posted the question. The word “VisionTouch” doesn’t appear on my receiver or the paperwork associated with it so that word didn’t ring a bell. Your explanation answers all my questions.

I stumbled across you site a few weeks ago (I’ve forgotten how I got there) and was very impressed with the thoroughness and objectivity I found here. Because of what I read in the forums and equipment discussions, I bought the 2100 ($108 through etronics – great service) and am very happy. One thing though – this is our first foray into “touch-screen” technology and the snacks we consume while sitting back and watching the tube leave us with greasy fingers and that puts fingerprints all over the pretty 2100 touch-screen. Any suggestions on how to clean the screen (other than giving up TV snacks)?

Again, I’m very impressed with your web site and will come back many, many times.

I find the AV2100 cleans up fine with a tissue. It's got a matte plastic coating over the screen that almost seems teflon coated. :-) If it gets "thick", use a slightly damp soft cloth. Never use any chemicals.

Sorry to hear the AV2100 won't work with your receiver -- it's a problem that Sony doesn't seem to want to address.

I have an STR-DA90ESG reciever that has VisionTouch, but it has a standard remote control really. Essentially it looks like a regular remote control with a little thing you can move around with your thumb. However, there are functions for most things on it, volume, etc. The thing that pisses me off about it is that there's no remote buttons for channel up and down. I know that pressing the button for Video 1 for example powers up the reciever and makes the reciever broadcast a TV turn-on, etc. It seems that this button could be broadcast from the 2100, do you think this is false? Since it's a 4-way button essentialy, I'd think that those up, down, left, right buttons could be stored in a 2100. Why is the STR-DA90ESG listed in here, is it because it is visiontouch, or because experience has shown this?

Thanks,
Jon

All Visiontouch receivers broadcast at 455KHz and use a different protocol... so no, the AV2100 cannot control the DA90ESG. It will do macros that turn a normal receiver on to Video 1 and turn the TV on, etc.

I thought the info was in the archives of this forum from ages ago, but I can't find it so I must have seen it elsewhere (maybe a S-link site). Anyways, what it was was a way to modify the DA90ESG specifically (I don't recall if it covered the 1015 or any other VisionTouch models) and adding what amounts to the IR receiver portion of a DA80ES (the 90's non-VisionTouch but otherwise 90% identical cousin).

This supposedly makes the 90 respond to 'normal' IR the same way the 80 does.

However, only the original poster of that thread ever actually did that. By now, such replacement parts are probably very expensive. It would probably be worthwhile to upgrade to a new Dolby Digital/DTS receiver, or use one of the two other options listed at that earlier link I posted.

arghh! i have a sony str-de1015g and i just purchased
the 2100. oh well....knowing about this in advance
would not have stopped the purchase. i needed the
2100 to backup an old toshiba tv remote with many
many special functions. it handled the toshiba perfectly. i can't believe sony built a receiver
that is incompatible with their own universal remote.
i've been thinking about upgrading to a dts enabled
receiver anyway...this is probably a good reason to
go for it.

You'd be surprised how many folks have used this as an excuse. ;-)

If I can't get my RM-LP204 to change my inputs on my TV, will this remote do it?
