Hi Everyone...well I have gone through numerous antennas from a channel master 4 bay to an 8 bay ... at least 4 different digiwave yagis and my last major pair of antennas were antennas direct AX91G's. I have a pair of CM7777
pre-amps and 2 100' drops of quad shield rg6.

My antenna systems are at 30 ft above ground. I'm in the northeast end of Guelph.. N1E-3P7

Anyhow since the re-allocation of ch9 and ch11 I essentially lost those channels (or I had no visible signal strength on the TV).

I had the opportunity to try an Eagle star antenna over the long weekend. I was at Guelph lake at a campsite picking up my daughter.. The camper onsite asked if I could look at his TV /antenna solution as it was not working.. he essentially had 50' of rg58 no pre-amp. and an eagle star antenna mounted on a 5' broomstick held upright by a christmas tree stand... We were in the lull of the valley with a 40' bluff of trees directly in our path to Toronto as well as shooting in between motor homes and pop up trailers..

I told him I would expect to see nothing but I'd give it a go..he had an HD converter box which was not selected properly on the LCD tv input.. We got it sorted out and scanned. I stepped out of the camper figuring there would be "no channel detected"..

I came back in and low and behold he had CBC 5.1/TVO 19.1 and Global 41.1!!!!

I was not expecting this...... I did some research and found out that there are a few versions of this antenna. The box information is pretty cheesy. I'm an RF engineer by trade and there was no way based on the box information that it should make the claims it did!!....There is a pre-amped version but apparently the pre-amp is not very good with dips and valleys in the response curve and subject to overload.

I purchased the passive version 53-6165-1V and put it up top at 11:00 today.. I dropped the XG91 down and put the coax to the eagle star not expecting much to occur.. SO I had the same pre-amp cable and cable length that was on the XG91... The eagle star received ALL of the channels I was receiving as well as the missing ch9 and flaky ch11... I went from 0 signal strength on channel 9 to 78 %.. I was also picking up ch23 off the side of the antenna at 70% and it's still at that level tonight (actually a little higher).

So off-shore manufactured or "cheap".. whatever you care to say... I have had success with this unit and it's asthetically pleasing to the neighbors. and for $39.00 it was the best bank for a buck. I now have 2 of them deployed, one pointed towards Totronto the second pointed towards Buffalo..

So the xg91's are in the garage now....!!!!!!

anyhow..a quick review from the Guelph area....

cheers
RJ
Are we there yet?

Somehow this does not make sense, I too am RF knowledgeable, worked over 32 yrs in the field and never heard of an antenna with this gain unless it is a dish

Item 53-6165-3
HDTV Indoor/Outdoor
Passive Antenna
Anti-UV coating and waterproof design lightweight. Compact size and easy to install with dipole in-built for the excellent UHF and VHF band signal reception
Frequency Range VHF: 174-230 MHZ, UHF: 470-862 MHZ
Antenna Gain VHF: 20 dB, UHF: 30 dB
Impedance 75 Ohms
Noise Figure ≤ 3.5 dB

Most of the gains specified should be reference a dipole dBi, based on this, the antenna would need at least, ten folded dipoles, 3 dB increase for each dipole set.

The possible reason chn 9 came in, is most UHF flat panels do not go down that far in frequencies or the pre-amps used are UHF only.

My two cents (nickels after September)

Well the XG91 is not designed, rated for VHF (I just noticed I typed UHF before) so it will not be fair to assume it is not better than the eagle star mentioned. As long as an antenna is built as per exact specs it will perform equally , the only difference is manufacturing quality therefore long term lifespan under the elements. I agree though those Gain values are cheese. For instance I am currently using a monoprice 19 dollars antenna with built in pre-amp (it even had water inside when I reinstalled it the other day due to renovations) that works excellently, getting all channels in the GTA as per Daniels map/table except 67, and the 2 low power CTV repeaters here in mississauga.

What channels do you receive ? Does time of day affect them?

I'm in the Dixe/Rathburn, Mississauga area. I've attached my Eaglestar pro 53-6153-3 on the side of my chimney, approx. 25 ft up, pointing straight south to take advantage of the Buffalo stations. I am receiving 21 crystal clear channels without the need of any amplification. It works fine day and night, even during the pouring rain today. Great cheap product ($40).

I Live on trobram/sandalwood. I purchased 53-6165-1V for $35. I installed it in the attic. I am also getting crystal clear 22 channels. Amazing thing is that it is catching 3.1 (CTV 2) from barrie form the back of the antenna. I already sold my db8 on kijiji. Amazing antenna.

How much does it weigh? Where are you located? Where did you buy it? This sounds like the antenna for Canal lake, east of Simcoe . I used to get 67, but its spotty now. The lake antenna is a UFO style omni directional. In the city there are two 8-bays which are aimed at Buffalo and the tower.

I am located in Brampton. I buy it from aa electronics on dixie/Matheson. Here is the link. It looks cosmetically ok.

Maybe this is just an issue of style, but "solutioni" is so overused as to be almost dumb. Please just say "his TV/antenna" or even "TV/Antenna system."

|he essentially had 50' of rg58 no pre-amp.
I was about to chide you and everyone else for not commenting on the losses to be expected just for using 50 ohm cable instead of 75 ohm cable, but an apt essay at [Link: audiosystemsgroup.com] told me that I was wrong -- there's not enough difference to consider.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I too have the Eaglestar Pro 6165AV. I am very impressed with what I'm getting from it (Stoney Creek, ON below the escarpment). I am getting a number of Buffalo channels (WNLO, WGRZ, ABC to name a few). I also have an RCA antenna which looks like the 4' wing of those Styrofoam planes we used to throw as kids connected to another TV. It can pull in CTV (9-1), but my Eaglestar cannot? Any thoughts/suggestions? Also, the Eaglestar has a 40db gain...if I used a different pre-amp, could I get more gain? I no ZERO about RF.

Just in case you're wondering, you can split with the Eaglestar. I bought a 2.4g splitter and am now running two TVs off the Eaglestar with the same channels and same quality.

Chn 9 is VHF, does the Eaglestar support VHF or just UHF, most pre-amps are UHF only too.

According to some, the specs show 30dB gain for the VHF, looking at the pic, mosts of that is amp gain, one dipole only for VHF, so, zero at antenna times gain still is zero for VHF.

Suggest if VHF is important eg chn 9 point VHF antenna to T.O. and combine at TV
