Does any one know if the HDMI output on the Direct TV with Tivo built in (HRD10250) is compatible with the Samsung HLN467 using the DVI input? I have a friend who just got the HR10250 and Direct TV is saying that the units are not compatible and to use the Component Cables on both.

I guess the big question is, is the HLN467 HDCP compliant? If so I'd give it a shot. But I should caution that a lot of HDMI devices are buggy or overly picky in terms of what they'll communicate digitally with.

...And you probably won't notice any visual difference using component.

I am a little ignorant in this area. Could the issue be that because the Samsung does not have HDCP compliance as you put it, not capable of getting a HDMI input and therefore does not recognize the output from the HR10250, thanks by the way for your reply

HDMI (and most DVI) devices will not output a digital signal if they cannot negotiate an HDCP connection, which has to do with copy protection.

After a search it seems that the HLN467 has a DVI-HDTV interface, which is HDCP compliant. But I can't tell from your original post - is this a situation where "they say this won't work but I haven't tried yet" or "this isn't working and this is what they said is the reason"?

The HR10 really looks the same via component or HDMI. Whichever you can hook up, it will work one way or another.

There have been a TON of issues with HDMI on the 10-250. The main culprit seems to be the HDMI card in the unit does not sit properly in the motherboard. Over on the TiVo boards people talk about having returned 4 different units and not had one that works yet. They proabably just told you that rather than eating yet anoter return on your unit. That being said, Spiky is right. Use the component. I did not see a difference myself between the 2 and there are alot less hassles.

Thanks, this is a a situation where DirecTV is saying that there is a compatibility issue and we have tried. The Samsung recognizes that the the HDMI to DVI is connected, but there is no image on the set. The previous Direct TV receiver without the Tivo worked fine, but it was a a DVI output on it. So, we have hooked it up via component, it works (using the component connection), but I am just curious as to why it is not working (HDMI to DVI). I do not understand as I have used HDMI to DVI cables before and wanted to know if there was someone out there who knew why it was not working. Thank you for you thoughts.

I have worked in this business for years and know of the issue of how poor the connection is on the HDMI, just trying to get to the truth of why this HR10250 and the Samsung are not working on the HDMI to DVI connection.
