A question I did not see posted out there: I have owned an MX 700 for a long while and now the screen is going out. So, after looking high and low, I settled on a MX 450. It is a bit tedious, but I am up for it and I have great macros from the 700 to reference so I won't have to reinvent the wheel.

But... it appears all the learned codes from the ISY99 and an old Pioneer receiver do not work. They have worked for years from the MX700, and they get do get "learned" and "saved" onto virgin soft keys on the MX450, but then when tested there is no response from either the ISY99 or the old Pioneer. I can learn codes for the Yamaha (also old, I am old), TIVO box, Apple TV etc.

One thing to note: Neither the ISY99 nor the Pioneer came with a remote. I found the discrete codes long ago from somewhere on the Remote Central site (pronto? Hex codes?) I was able to get them onto the MX700 way back through the now defunct universal browser on the MX editor. (not really happy about seeing this functionality go). Oddly enough, I tried learning codes from the MX700 for the TIVO box as well and the MX450 fails to pick those up as well. The MX450 picks up codes fine when broadcast from the factory remotes but not from the MX700. But the MX700 does control all components fine.

So I conclude the MX700 fails to broadcast codes only to the MX450?

I have not connected the MX450 to the computer for upgrades and have not downloaded the back up software.

Thanks for any insight you collectively may be able to impart.

Hmm. Some of the older URC remotes were sometimes a little bit "off" in how they reproduced codes... and it might be enough to throw off the MX-450's learning and result in them being unusable? Although, with that said, I've used an MX-700 as a donor remote for MX-500's before without issue.

Have you tried some of the tips as posted here: [Link: remotecentral.com]

Daniel - Yes, I eventually was able to get one other code to learn from the MX700. But just one of many that I have tried and would like. And this was after many attempts: (long hold, short hold, after erasing learned code, after erasing entire device, before naming the button, after naming button, after update to firmware...) well that is just about all the options I can control and I am now giving up on the fickle MX450. And the screen is shot - no longer gives me the "next" and "back" messages on the bottom in program mode and there ore other visual errors on the screen which only foretell more problems. (after 3 days use).

The Harmony One? yeah, learned them all no prob. But I hate the touch screen and my kids hated the delay so they never used it. And that is the death knell of any Harmony product because then everything is out of whack all the time. If only URC and Harmony could join forces and build a usable friendly remote. So I guess I will stick with the 10 y/o remote. Do you know where a guy can find a slightly used/new MX700?

MX-700s might be a bit hard to come by. But remember that the MX-800 and MX-850 are the same thing.

Why does your mx-editor no longer have the universal browser? If you need to upgrade the software, look on this site under NXG.

edmund - I continue to use the mx-editor for the 700. Works fine. I haven't tried to search the database for codes for a while so it may still do that. Above, I meant that the mx450 archiver successfully updated the firmware for the 450 and yet it continues to be finicky with learning codes. The reason for changing to the 450 is that the screen on the 700 is failing to show the top 3 rows and getting worse. Oddly enough the screen on the 450 is also showing some peculiar signs of defectiveness, noted in previous post.

I think the solution is either: 1) hunt down a 700 in the wild (used). or 2) get a mx800 also used. Will a 800 work in the editor of the 700 (mx700-editor)? I have the mx700 editor, and I think I can find an mx800 used.
