I'm using a cheap universal remote control with a free dvd player, so I don't expect much.
Using a GE RM24912/24921 universal remote control
trying to operate a COBY DVD player, model DVD-227
using given instructions with 3 digit code "317" for COBY DVD products
Given instructions: Hold setup button until red light is lit. select device. enter code (317). press power button to see if it works
does not respond with the given code and instructions.
Please advise.

One-for-all brand of universal remotes like the urc-6820 or 8820 lists 7 codes for Coby dvd players, everyone of them different then the other. And your's only list one, forget about it.
