I don't see any instructions for the STR-DE197 in the otherwise excellent instructions posted in the Sone Remote forum. Do I need to switch to AV-1? I've tried using the instructions for the STR-DE597, but it didn't make a difference. Any thoughts about what else to try? I am able to get my Sony CD changer, Phillips TV, Panasonic VCR and Panasonic DVD to work with this GE remote, but no luck so far with the Sony receiver. TIA

Your model is stuck set to AV2, you'll need another universal remote. The ofa urc-6131, has preset code for receivers set to AV2, the code AUD1758.

I am pretty sure there is no AV1/AV2 setting for this receiver. Sony typically does not include this option on the lower end receivers, and there is nothing in the manual to indicate any changes are possible.

I don't know why the preset code for your GE remote doesn't operate the 197, but it is possible that it comes preset for AV2, which is a fairly common practice for Sony. If this is the case, you will not be able to operate the receiver with the GE remote.

If your GE remote has learning capability, then you will have to learn everything. If not, then I guess you won't be able to control the receiver.

Thanks for your input. I checked with Sony online support and confirmed what you suspected: there is no way to change the setting on this particular receiver. I can live wtih a separate remote for the receiver since I've gone from five to two. A big improvement. Thanks again.

Thanks, Edmund. I'll live with this remote for a while. I appreciate the suggestion though.
